Overview

Bateen World Academy is an award-winning international school in Abu Dhabi designed to provide a contemporary learning environment for students from FS2 to Year 13. Completed in 2011, the 23,000 m² campus was conceived to support a forward-looking approach to education through innovative planning, sustainable materials and a distinctive architectural identity. Today, the school delivers the English National Curriculum alongside the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), serving a diverse international community. The three-storey academic building is defined by energising orange aluminium cladding and complemented by a series of auxiliary structures. At its heart, a large, naturally lit atrium creates a central gathering space that organises movement throughout the campus while reinforcing the school's open and collaborative learning environment.

Design Response

The campus is organised around a large, light-filled atrium that forms the heart of the school and connects the academic spaces across three levels. The main building is complemented by auxiliary structures, while sustainable materials and a carefully considered spatial arrangement support a secure, engaging and future-focused learning environment.

Key Design Strategies:

  • Three-storey academic building with a distinctive orange aluminium façade
  • Large, naturally lit central atrium organising the campus
  • Auxiliary buildings supporting the main educational facilities
  • Innovative use of space reflecting contemporary teaching environments
  • Sustainable materials integrated throughout the design

Experience of Place

Natural daylight fills the central atrium, creating visual connections across the campus and providing an open focal point for students and staff. The clear organisation of teaching spaces, together with the surrounding auxiliary buildings, establishes a secure and stimulating environment that supports everyday learning.

Bateen World Academy established a benchmark for contemporary educational design in the UAE through its integration of architecture, sustainability and innovative learning environments. More than a decade after its completion, the campus continues to support an internationally recognised educational programme for students from FS2 to Year 13.
