Overview
Located within Abu Dhabi's evolving waterfront district, Fisherman's Wharf reinterprets the character of a traditional fishing harbour through contemporary architecture. Appointed as Lead Architect by Modon, Dewan Architects + Engineers developed a design that balances simplicity, functionality and a strong sense of place, creating a welcoming destination that complements the surrounding marina environment.

Project Vision
Rather than relying on decorative gestures, the design embraces a philosophy of architectural restraint. Inspired by the principle of "less is more," the project focuses on proportion, materiality and carefully composed spaces to create a timeless waterfront destination. The architecture prioritises clarity and function, allowing the surrounding public realm and waterfront setting to define the visitor experience while reflecting the understated character of Abu Dhabi's coastal heritage.

Design Response
The compact building is organised to maximise flexibility while maintaining a calm architectural presence within the wider development. Clean lines, simple forms and carefully considered proportions establish a contemporary identity that complements rather than competes with the surrounding public spaces. The restrained palette allows natural light, views and the waterfront setting to become integral components of the architectural experience, creating spaces that are equally suited to everyday use and seasonal events.
Key design strategies included:
- Creating a contemporary interpretation of traditional waterfront architecture
- Prioritising simplicity and clarity over ornamental expression
- Establishing strong visual connections to the surrounding marina
- Designing flexible spaces that support changing operational needs
- Integrating the building seamlessly within the wider public realm
- Using proportion, light and materiality to create a timeless architectural character

Experience of Place
Visitors experience Fisherman's Wharf as an extension of the waterfront itself. Open, welcoming and human in scale, the architecture encourages movement between indoor and outdoor spaces while framing views across the marina. The restrained design language creates a calm backdrop for restaurants, retail and public activity, allowing the atmosphere of the waterfront and the daily rhythm of the harbour to define the character of the destination.
