Astana Grand Mosque

Overview

Astana Grand Mosque is a landmark religious and cultural destination in Kazakhstan’s capital city, conceived as a contemporary expression of Islamic architecture rooted in the nation’s history, identity, and traditions. Commissioned under the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev and delivered in collaboration with Sembol Construction, the mosque was designed by Dewan Architects + Engineers to become a defining civic symbol and one of Central Asia’s most significant places of worship. Spanning approximately 57,000 square metres, the development accommodates up to 30,000 worshippers and visitors, while reinforcing Astana’s role as a modern cultural capital.

The mosque draws inspiration from Kazakhstan’s Silk Road heritage, nomadic traditions, and monumental Islamic architecture, translating these references into a highly contemporary design language defined by geometric clarity, monumental scale, and intricate craftsmanship. The central dome, among the largest of its kind in the world, rises above a carefully composed sequence of courtyards, arcades, gardens, and prayer halls. Throughout the project, Dewan worked closely with the client to balance architectural ambition with operational performance, ensuring efficient circulation, structural innovation, and a cohesive visitor experience across the expansive complex.

Project Vision

The vision for Astana Grand Mosque was to create a world-class religious and cultural landmark that reflects the values, aspirations, and heritage of Kazakhstan while establishing a new architectural icon for the capital city. The project sought to reinterpret traditional Islamic spatial principles through a contemporary architectural language, creating an environment defined by generosity, monumentality, and spiritual significance while accommodating large-scale public gatherings with clarity and comfort.

Design Response

Dewan Architects + Engineers developed an architectural response informed by Kazakhstan’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring forms of Islamic architecture. The mosque is organized around a formal sahn framed by riwaqs, leading worshippers toward the central haram and monumental dome.

Key design strategies included:

• Development of a monumental central dome and column-free prayer hall
• Integration of geometric ornamentation, Arabic calligraphy, and crystal detailing
• Coordination of complex structural systems using lightweight steel framing
• Design of ceremonial courtyards, arcades, and circulation sequences aligned with Islamic spatial principles

Experience of Place

The visitor journey is defined through a carefully choreographed progression of spaces, beginning at the main entrance gate and extending through the sahn toward the central prayer hall beneath the soaring dome. Landscaped gardens, shaded arcades, and monumental minarets frame views across the complex while reinforcing a sense of scale and ceremony. Within the mosque, intricate materials, calligraphic detailing, expansive chandeliers, and richly patterned carpets create an atmosphere of contemplation and grandeur. The spatial composition balances monumentality with hospitality, offering worshippers and visitors an environment that is both spiritually resonant and highly accessible.

Astana Grand Mosque establishes a new benchmark for large-scale religious architecture in Central Asia through its combination of cultural significance, engineering innovation, and civic presence. Dewan’s role extended beyond architectural design to include circulation planning, structural optimization, and technical coordination across the expansive complex.
