Djibouti Palace Kempinski marked a defining milestone for both Djibouti and Dewan Architects + Engineers. Completed in 2006, it became the country's first five-star hotel and Dewan's first major hospitality project outside the United Arab Emirates. Located on a prominent waterfront site overlooking the Gulf of Tadjoura, the hotel established a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in East Africa while supporting Djibouti's ambitions to become a destination for international business, diplomacy, and tourism.

Designed by Dewan Architects + Engineers as Lead Architect, the 244,000-square-metre development blends contemporary hospitality design with architectural influences drawn from both Arabian and African traditions, reflecting Djibouti's unique position at the meeting point of the two regions. Delivered in collaboration with Japanese contractor Taisei Corporation, the hotel was completed in just under twelve months to host the 2006 Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit, requiring exceptional coordination between design, engineering, and construction teams.

Project Vision

The vision for Djibouti Palace Kempinski was to create a world-class luxury hotel that reflected Djibouti's strategic position on the Horn of Africa while establishing a new standard for hospitality within the region. The project sought to create an architectural identity rooted in its geographical and cultural context, combining international hospitality standards with design inspired by the country's relationship to both Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. At the same time, the development was designed to accommodate major international events, strengthening Djibouti's position as a destination for diplomacy, business, and tourism.

Design Response

Dewan Architects + Engineers developed the hotel around a contemporary architectural language that subtly combines Arabian and African influences. Elegant proportions, generous public spaces, and carefully framed views create a strong relationship between the architecture and its waterfront setting while establishing an arrival experience appropriate for an international luxury hotel.

The development includes 177 guestrooms and suites alongside restaurants, conference facilities, wellness amenities, landscaped gardens, and leisure spaces that respond to both business and resort guests. Delivered under an exceptionally demanding programme, the project required intensive coordination between architectural, structural, engineering, and specialist consultants to achieve the required quality within an accelerated construction schedule.
