Overview

Media One Tower is one of Dubai's most recognisable mixed-use developments, occupying a prominent site at the entrance to Dubai Media City. Designed in collaboration with TRO | Jung Brannen, with Dewan Architects + Engineers serving as Lead Design Consultant, the 43-storey tower combines hospitality, commercial office space, retail, and lifestyle amenities within a single vertically integrated development.

Completed in 2008, Media One Tower marked Dewan Architects + Engineers' first mixed-use project in Dubai. Bringing together hospitality, commercial offices, retail, and leisure within a single high-rise development, the project demonstrated the practice's growing capability to deliver complex, multi-functional buildings at a pivotal moment in Dubai's urban expansion. Distinguished by its iconic pixelated façade and prominent position overlooking Dubai Media City, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah, the tower remains one of the city's best-known architectural landmarks.

Project Vision

The vision for Media One Tower was to create a landmark mixed-use destination that reflected the dynamic character of Dubai Media City while bringing together hospitality, business, and lifestyle within a single contemporary building. Rather than separating these functions into individual developments, the project integrates them vertically, creating a highly efficient tower where hotel guests, office occupants, retailers, and visitors share a connected urban environment while maintaining the operational requirements of each use.

Design Response

Dewan Architects + Engineers worked closely with TRO | Jung Brannen to develop a highly complex mixed-use tower that balances architectural expression with operational performance. The building's distinctive form is defined by a glazed curtain wall composed of irregularly orientated façade panels that create the appearance of a digitally pixelated surface. As daylight changes throughout the day, the façade produces shifting reflections that reinforce the tower's dynamic identity and establish a bold architectural presence within Dubai Media City.

Internally, the development integrates the Media One Hotel, Grade A office accommodation, restaurants, retail, and shared building services within a single vertical structure. Coordinating these diverse uses required extensive collaboration between architectural, structural, façade, lighting, vertical transportation, mechanical, electrical, and specialist engineering disciplines to ensure the building operated seamlessly as one integrated development.

Key design strategies included:

  • Integrating hospitality, commercial offices, retail, and leisure within a single mixed-use tower
  • Creating a distinctive pixelated curtain wall through irregularly orientated glazed façade panels
  • Coordinating sophisticated vertical transportation systems serving multiple building functions
  • Integrating complex building services to support independent hotel and office operations
  • Establishing a landmark architectural identity at the entrance to Dubai Media City

Experience of Place

Media One Tower was conceived as more than a commercial high-rise. Its combination of hotel accommodation, restaurants, offices, retail, and public amenities creates a destination that remains active throughout the day and into the evening, supporting the vibrant character of Dubai Media City. Floor-to-ceiling glazing provides expansive views across Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, Emirates Golf Club, and the Arabian Gulf, while the mixed-use programme encourages interaction between business, hospitality, and leisure. The active podium strengthens the relationship between the tower and the surrounding public realm, establishing the building as both a workplace and lifestyle destination.

Performance and Impact

Media One Tower marked a defining milestone in Dewan Architects + Engineers' history as the firm's first mixed-use project in Dubai. The development demonstrated the practice's ability to successfully coordinate complex, vertically integrated programmes involving hospitality, commercial offices, retail, and leisure within a single building. More than fifteen years after its completion, the tower remains one of Dubai's most recognisable mixed-use landmarks and continues to define the entrance to Dubai Media City.

Beyond its architectural presence, the project helped establish a new model for mixed-use development within Dubai's emerging media and technology district, bringing together workplaces, hospitality, and lifestyle uses in a highly connected urban environment.

Dewan's involvement ensured:

  • Delivery of Dewan Architects + Engineers' first mixed-use project in Dubai
  • Coordination of one of the firm's most technically complex developments, involving numerous specialist consultants and engineering disciplines
  • Integration of hospitality, office, retail, and leisure functions within a single high-rise development
  • Delivery of sophisticated façade, vertical transportation, lighting, and building services systems supporting multiple building uses
  • Creation of an architectural landmark that continues to define the entrance to Dubai Media City
