Overview
W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island is one of the world's most distinctive hospitality destinations and a defining landmark within Yas Marina Circuit. Designed by Asymptote Architecture, with Dewan Architects + Engineers serving as Lead Consultant, the hotel spans the Formula 1 circuit itself, creating an architectural experience where hospitality, engineering, and motorsport converge. The project has become an internationally recognised symbol of Abu Dhabi and one of the emirate's most recognisable contemporary buildings.
Completed in just 18 months for the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009, the development demanded exceptional multidisciplinary coordination and technical delivery. Dewan Architects + Engineers played a central role in translating Asymptote Architecture's design vision into a coordinated and buildable development, integrating the complex architectural, structural, and engineering systems required for a hotel positioned directly above an active Formula 1 circuit.

Project Vision
The vision for W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island was to create a destination that would become inseparable from the Formula 1 experience while establishing a new architectural identity for Yas Island. Rather than positioning the hotel alongside the circuit, the design places the building directly above the track, allowing guests to experience the energy, speed, and spectacle of motorsport from within the architecture itself. Inspired by movement, technology, and geometric form, the project was conceived as both a luxury hotel and a civic landmark, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's ambition to establish Yas Island as an international destination for hospitality, entertainment, and major sporting events.

Design Response
The defining architectural feature of the hotel is its sweeping steel and glass gridshell, which drapes over and visually unites two hotel buildings on either side of the Formula 1 circuit. Spanning approximately 217 metres and supported by ten V-shaped steel columns, the structure creates a dramatic architectural form that responds to the movement of the racetrack while establishing one of the Middle East's most recognisable skylines. The gridshell comprises approximately 5,800 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels integrated with a programmable LED lighting system that transforms the building after sunset through dynamic colour displays.
Beyond its visual identity, the envelope provides environmental shading while allowing natural daylight to penetrate the building and maintaining uninterrupted views across Yas Marina and the circuit. As Lead Consultant, Dewan Architects + Engineers coordinated the architectural, structural, and engineering disciplines required to realise one of the region's most technically demanding hospitality developments while preserving the integrity of the original architectural concept.
Key design strategies included:
- Delivering a luxury hotel that spans an active Formula 1 circuit
- Coordinating the delivery of the landmark 217-metre steel and glass gridshell
- Integrating approximately 5,800 diamond-shaped glazed panels with a programmable LED façade
- Maximising views across Yas Marina, the racetrack, and the surrounding waterfront
- Delivering a technically complex hospitality project within an accelerated programme for the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Experience of Place
W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island offers a hospitality experience unlike any other. Guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, terraces, and leisure spaces overlook the Formula 1 circuit, allowing visitors to experience the energy of the racetrack throughout the year while maintaining uninterrupted views across Yas Marina and the surrounding waterfront. By day, the gridshell reflects the changing light across the marina and the Arabian Gulf, giving the building a constantly evolving appearance. After sunset, the illuminated façade transforms the hotel into one of Abu Dhabi's most recognisable architectural landmarks, reinforcing its identity as both a hospitality destination and the visual centrepiece of Yas Island.
